Yeah as long as there is no sunlight on the click - they heat up real fast in the sun! The hot end should be about 31 or 32, if you can check that it remains at this with the heat mat (check with a thermometer at various times over a few days), then you should be right without a thermostat (I like the peace of mind they give)...

And yeah check that the cool end is somewhere between 26 - 28ish...

If you are finding the heat mat is making it too hot, try putting some insulation between that and the substrate, a little at a time (tile, a towel, paper etc.)
