Don't use walnut shell. They'll eat it, and it will impact them. Imagine those sharp things going through your gut.
Newspaper is the easiest. Marine carpet aint bad as a substitute, but you'll find yourself cursing anything other than newspaper down the line. Beardies crap EVERYWHERE... and run their tails through it too, just to create more mess.
