The thing is, to make a profit most retail shops work on achieving 100% mark up on items/animals they buy. So for them to have these high prices they are obviously buying their snakes at the same price breeders sell them for privately, and 100% mark up gives them price they have. So it would be normal for any petshop.

I paid $400 each for my stimsons from a private breeder so $500 isn't that much different but for a pet store to attempt to gain double mark up, I can't see how they manage to move them. They should be talking the sellers down in price to keep the prices balanced or not take them at all. Well, thats how I operate anyway. We can't have reptiles in NSW shops but the same rule applies with all our animals.
