I usually use hot water, but for dry heat I have used a pre-heated wheat pack. It may have to be re-heated to get the rodent fully thawed and warm. You have to be careful not to overheat and cook them. A general guideline is that if it's too hot for you to apply to your back, it will cook the rodent.
