I disagree with alex_c.... depends on your layout, how often people walk past, how often it's disturbed etc.... it's not a hard and fast rule.

Have you got a picture of your enclosure?
I would guess that 6 is enough but depends on how safe your animal feels...and not on numbers of hides.
ie. are the hides small enough that it touches all sides of it when it is inside?
