Hi Sarah_m! If your willing to part with the coin I would go for a BHP. They are, when established feeders, a hardy species that adapts well to captivity. They are terrestrial (ground dwelling) and like dry areas. A thermal gradient of 34 - 30 is required during the day and temperature can drop to ambient at night during most of the year. If you want to spend less, a carpet species is a good choice. However Diamond pythons are considered to be a more difficult species to keep. Special attention needs to be paid to temperatures. Having said that plenty of people choose diamonds as their first snakes without any problems. It is important, no matter what species you choose, to have the correct husbandry information. Keep in mind that both the BHP and Diamond Pythons can grow to become quite large specimens. 6 to 8 foot would be realistic. Hope this helps.
