I've seen blindsnakes before and they seem to vary a lot - and eassily confused with giant worms. Would be very cool if that was what you saw.
Best bet is to google info on the blindsnakes of Australia and see if one comes close to your visual description.
Do you get bandy bandys in your area? bandy bandys feed on blind snakes. I think most blind snakes can exude a secretion - sort of pepperminty smell if they're handled. Maybe bandy bandys like the fresh breath after taste of blind snakes.
