If it's for an assignment, you could theorise about both. A loss because they moved to an desert area where it's pointless to see with heat (because everything else is hot as well) and over time began to prey on other reptiles. A lack of development because they always were in a desert area and already preyed on reptiles. Maybe you could see if you can do a backtrack of actually where they evolved, thus proving or disproving the theories above.
