I would not expect your cardboard idea will work.

Lash out and purchase a thermometer. What you are aiming for is an enclosure with a hot end that gets to about the mid 30's and a cool end that never gets much above 25c.

In the wild on a hot day they can seek refuge under rocks or similar cover that takes a long time to heat.

Too hot will kill a reptile much faster than too cool.
