| Is there a chance something could be stuck in his mouth or throat? My spotted has done this if he taken in some substrate when he's gone to tag me and missed, he then keeps opening his mouth and wiping it to get the stuff out, sounds similar behaviour.
But having said that I knew what caused mine.
