In my experience so far if I position my vents one down low and one up high it will cause a chimney type effect hot air will escape and cool air will enter. Using this method more heat and enery will need to be generated to keep the temperatures up to an appropriate level causing electricity bills to be noticebly higher when using multiple enclosures. Additionally I noted with this method it is almost impossible (in my area) to maintain an appropriate humidity level for most species. Cage surfaces did not hold heat very well especially when the enclosure is positioned on a cool surface. To eliminate this problem, on the advice of pro-products, I used adjustable ventilation and positioned them half way up the back piece. The vents are closed most the year, open to cool adults for breeding. I also needed to insulate the floor and celling of my enclosures to stop cool temperatures rising through the floor lowering the temps of my cage surfaces.
