I'm not sure where you were looking 2 years ago but I certainly can't recall seeing them for $12,000 for hatchlings, in fact if you knew the right people $5-6k was normal. As a matter of fact when there was a bit of a upturn in their numbers after the NSW amnesty they were 5k each.
