moth

Greetings Earthling,
You cocoon looks like that of a cossid moth. Goat moth as some call them. They live in the ground around the base of trees, Red gums are favourites, where they construct vertical tunnels to the surface. They move up and down these sometimes very deep tunnels, feeding on the sap from the roots of the tree.
These are the Bardi grub favoured as bait by Murray cod fishermen. When mature, up to 17 yrs?, they go up to the top of their tunnel, form the cocoon, change into moth. With the advent of the first winter rains they emerge and hatch into the big grey moth light ,attracted to shop windows etc.
Trust this helps!
