Terracotta pots sealant??

just wondering if anyone has used terracotta pots in their snake cages for hides and water bowls? and if so did you use terracotta sealant on the pots to make them waterproof? we put some water in some small pots and they leaked...

i just heard that the sealant could be toxic for animals, does anyone know if this is true? or any way to get around it if it is?
