Yes, you have to wait the two years (in NSW anyway), even if you do the course.
The way 'Wires' works from what I understand is that you do a Intro course, then you do a 2 day course(which covers all aussie animals), then your qualified to do so much, but no snakes, you have to then go on a specialist reptile course, which I think is 2 days(someone correct me if this is wrong), then you can build up experience alongside other experienced handlers.
I reckon by doing thsi you can then convince the NPWS that you have enough experience to upgrade your licence, along with maybe references from experienced people that you have worked with/become friends with.
It's not going to happen overnight, I reckon a year maybe, because the snake courses only run every so often.
Peterescue will know more I am sure he will comment.

Are you wanting to keep Venomous in a year or two then? or just curious as to what's involved?
