I have read alot of the discussions about GTP's here in OZ. Alot of GTP's are said to be from PNG.
Yes, most aren't from Australia.

Quote:
Are the OZ GTP and the PNG GTP the same in looks and the like?
The ones from Southern PNG are said to be almost identical, apparently they can't be separated even by DNA analysis (well, if they wanted to spend enough $ I'm sure they'd find a few fixed allele differences, but it would be hell expensive). There are very significant differences between Aussies and other populations. Some people recognise them as different taxa.

Quote:
Why does it matter if they are PNG or not?
People have their reasons. They range from sentimental to ecological. Others, like you, don't think it matters.

Quote:
If it's the same species, whats the diff?
There are big differences within species.

Quote:
How can people say for sure that some are from PNG?
Some are clearly very different from anything which naturally occurs in Australia.

Quote:
Are these PNG ones licenced here?
Yes, but it's at least a little bit grey.

Quote:
Why/how do people get them in from PNG?
Why? Because they are worth about $5 over there and freely available, as opposed to hideously expensive and difficult to get hold of over here. It probably doesn't happen very often these days (perhaps not at all), most of what you see for sale is captive bred, probably from animals imported from overseas. Interestingly, some of what you see in captivity here doesn't seem to be directly from PNG, aru islands etc, as they have patterns like those selectively bred for in the USA. Ugly looking things in my opinion (black speckles and stuff, eww!). I saw one with lots of blue markings which I must admit looked pretty. If I ever manage to get enough money together to buy some, I'll certainly be wanting to buy Australian ones if they're available.
