Both mites and ticks lay numerous eggs per clutch. These eggs are laid away from the normal host and the nymphs move back to an area where a host is most likely to be encountered. It is more likely that you have inadvertently picked up tick eggs and carried them into that enclosure either on the snake or on substrate.
