This debate has been going, and will go on forever. Unless I'm mistaken there is absolutely no evidence to suggest feeding growing reptiles what we would perceive as an excessive amount of food in order to attain optimum growth has any long lasting effect on the reptiles health. Overweight/obese adults is a totally different story.
In the wild there are boom and bust years and most of our wildlife is accustomed to take advantage of the boom seasons.
Say a baby snake hatched in a good season with unlimited food available I'm sure it would eat itself silly. The driving factor of any wild animal, from the second it is born is to survive to adulthood and reproduce. If a snake can take advantage of a few good seasons and reach this goal sooner than normal then of course it will do just that.
