ticks

hi all
just a little warning to anyone that likes to use natural substrate for their pets
i often go to the local park to grab a colection of gum leaves, bark etc for my BHP that seems to apreciate something to slide under. i always put it in a container, spray with top of decent and leave it there for about 1/2 hr before placing it in the cage.
i thought that would be a fairly safe practice but i found two ticks, (though only small), on
my little girl yesterday. they may have been sprayed and dying but they still managed to latch on to my snake and cause her the discomfort of me removing them. perhaps this is
a practice i should cease. anyone had simillar probs??
