Sometimes they eat the babies if they are disturbed too early, and I've heard of it happening if the male is left in when she's having/just had the babies.

Both sexes will eat the babies, and sometimes they're just not 'programmed right' for breeding. A bit like humans really...except we do other things other than eat babies.
