The fur or feathers are important for healthy digestion in most reptiles - they don't absorb it but it assists in proper stool formation. That's why I use mice until the snake needs to go onto something bigger - even hatchie carpets usually prefer to eat a fuzzy mouse as their first feed in preference to pinkies, which are a bit small for a carpet in my opinion. You'll be surprized at how easily a hatchie can eat something which seems like a big meal to us.
