I just found a nice piece of willow in the garden for my snake. But it in a black plastic bag and left it out in the sun for a day (in summer) to kill any mites or bugs. I left all the rough bits on it and every knob or rough bit has skin on it during shedding so i find it is useful to leave them rough.
