Dont heat mats run mainly on contact?

So if you raise it up it will be too cold? Not sure but I think someone on here said that once?

Put extra paper towel in there with his bark on top and give him another hide in the cooler bit and if you can fit one in the middle too, lots of choices.

The more paper towel the more insulation I would say. I have about 5 pieces in mine as they fit perfect like yours so that's what I use too and no thermostat, it doesn't get too hot as it's only an 8 watt heatmat.
