Rat breeding question

I have been breeding rats for the last 3 or more years and recently i havnt been getting many pups at all.
The alpha male is atleast 2.5 years old, but there is also another younger male aswell.
Is it possible that the old male is losing fertility and at the same time stopping the younger bloke from having a go?
Any other ideas?
I didnt really want to kill the alpha male because he is like a pet.
Also how long do rats usually live for?
