I offered mine this season live day old pinkies for the 1st feed. 1/2 took those. the next time i offered thawed and the rest took those. For troubled children's in the past i've also placed them in a small container (aa battery box) and placed the pinky (thawed overnight), they don't like it touching them so eat it to have it out of the box. I've found it to be very effective, though i do like the sound of the pilchard idea might try it next season if needed.
But once you get them feeding they are little machines, getting that 1st feed is the tricky bit.
