I agree they know where the heat is if they want it. You'll probably find the one at the cold end is a bit darker in colour and absorbs heat better or has been hogging the basking spot for hours and needs to cool down. Herps are experts at controlling their body temp as long as they have the option of warm or cold they'll be where they need to be.
