I wrapped the probe and the thermometer together and they are sitting right on the sand at the hot end. The Thermostat is also going flat out so thats not the problem.

Is it worth making a small square with some wood and placing a thin layer of sand in this directly above the heat cord and then place the tub over the thin layer of sand? As the tubs I am using are not perfectly flush and I think there might be some loss of efficiency there?
