They are not generally fatal within themselves are thought to be the primary vector in diseases like OPMV and IBD.
Mites can usually be seen with the naked eye. They tend to congregate around the eye, vent etc.
Other signs are the reptile soaking in a their water bowl for long periods followed by "pepper like" specs floating in the water.
Top of Decent spray is IMHO the most effective way of dealing with a mite problem.
