i have had several mates that had dogs either stolen or lost and have never seen again most of them stolen
and to be honest both my dogs have been chipped and have been to the vet several times and not once have they been checked so i could have stolen them for all they know
so yes good in theory
a lot of vets don't have microchip scanners and the ones that do may have a different type of scanners that only read the type of chip that their vet practise uses. And from what I hear its pretty easy to remove a chip from an animal and re-insert it in another even. And even if a vet has a compatable scanner that will read that particular type of chip, thats assuming thieves would take stolen snakes to a vet. Maybe if they sold it to someone else it may eventually end up at a vet at some stage. But the chances it would be scanned successfully are remote at best. Sad but true.
Microchipping is probably only useful in a research situation for monitoring animals and not really a 'security solution'
Getting some high tech cameras and surveillance gear with alarms etc to monitor your house and collection would be a much better option and much more secure. And in the event that you may actually catch some scumbag thieves in the act of stealing your animals a shotgun and shovel may also come in handy
