I don't think its vinegar that you use
and am sure its vanilla extract on a small dish. Try that and it should get rid of the vinegar smell. You don't have eggs in there at the moment I presume? Give the vanilla a go and then leave the door open a bit to air it out.
I never use those (made in china) plastic thermometers. Total garbage in my opinion. Toss it out the window
Get a few of these from the Herp Shop for $30each There the ones I use and they are good quality.
