I'm actually just about to pick up my first python (she hatches in Dec and I pick her up in Jan!) After loads of research and asking every herp expert I can corner, we decided on a Stimo (Broome locality becauser they are so beautiful, and the Wheatbelt ones were too pricey...)

After lots of discussion, we decided that a carpet might be a bit too much of a responsibility as a first snake - they are a size up from the antaresias which, when you aren't experienced at handling snakes, really does count!

Antaresias are also reasonably priced and will fit comfortably in the 3x2x2 enclosure.

I would LOVE a Diamond down the track, but by all accounts are a fair bit harder to look after - they seem to need quite specific care and are prone to health problems in captivity.

So this is just my (very) amateur opinion but I suppose I am approaching it from the perspective of someone who is a true beginner - facing all the difficulties and decisions myself!
