Stimi for sure if ur after a smaller snake.
I'm sure you can find a friendly carpet if u want a larger friend.

Maculosa, Black Headed, Woma would be my top three... The Mac because like the Stmi's they are gorgeous, great temper and only get to 1.5m or so. The BHP and Woma because they are gorgeous and fill all of your requirements provided a slightly larger snake isn't an issue.

Murray Darlings too. Also beautiful snakes, temperament and pattern wise!

go for a bredli. best snake you could possibly own
my crew:2x hypo bredli pythons, 2x green tree frogs, 3x central beardies, 1x macquarie short neck turtle, 2x oscars and 6x yabbies

is say a stimmi if you want something small but a coastal if you dont mind the size. iv got two coastals and one is absolutely fantastic and the other one is just starting to calm down now but iv only had her for a week
2x doggies, 2x kitty cats, 2x not so gold goldfish, 2x coastal bubbas and an adorable rat
adding a bluey later on in the year

Ah, that's what I was advised by every pet shop keeper in town!
But then all keepers I contacted (Melbourne, Sydney and Adelaide) about Coastals said NO WAY.
Maybe an Inland Carpet as they're more docile, less snappy and not as long fully grown, I was told.
And defo NOT Spotted, Children or Stimsons
Too tiny and finicky to feed as hatchies and snappy at times. (my first bite ever was one of these at a pet shop!)
So I went with a Woma!
(Sandfire being the nicest markings)
A very, very docile python, my 5yo handles with much joy.
Very hardy and so easy to look after, never refused a meal, being quail or rats.
Oh, and cheaper at breeder than a Children at pet shop!
The nicest Pilbara Stimsons were $450-$650.

Spotted or any of the morelia spilotas (carpets) coastal or inland (MDP)
Most hatchies will tend to be nippy, but grow out of it. My bredli is psycho
I wouldnt reccommend bredli as a first snake.... as beautiful as they are....
My vote: stimmi if you want small, spotted if you want bigger..... cant go wrong, excellent beginners species imo. closely followed by coastal or inland carpet (incl MDP)
Edit: Spotteds are concidered almost bullet proof beginners snakes. They eat like horses.... anything you give them (well, mine do) my 2 have never even looked at biting me. Easiest snake in the world to look after and learn husbandry (IMO) They dont have the dietry issues of womas & BHP.... and spotteds (& stimmies) are usually cheaper to buy and usually redily available.

Blue.... the thread has gone from stage 1 (serious) to stage 2 (funny)

It is called 'attempted humour'
They are just pulling the op's (and your) chain
Next, expect someone to suggest T-Rex

Wow some people take life way to serious...
And a deathadder does fill all the requirements the op asked for... he didn't say anything about it having to be a python.Last edited by ghosts; 20-Jun-12 at 05:42 AM.

Get a woma python it was my first snake and she has great patterns never ever bites easyest thing to look after( all you need is enclosure substrait water dish heat mat and hide) the BEST starter snake is a woma python

Everyone's got to have a Noodles Stimmi in their life, they're the best ever...
8 years on he's still the big girls fav!
they're great to hang out and watch tv with the,
the kids love to play with him,
they're too cute when they're babies,
they don't take up to much space... they maintain they're colour and patterning into old age unlike other mac breeds..
Other wise the BHP are the best for the larger snakes... love my Didge... lol...Finally too many snakes, lizards & skinks to list them all.... yay! Happy, happy herper...

I couldn't get my childreni to strike me to feel what a tag is like never been tagged by anything other than a n albino darwin, it all comes down to the snake, although there are some that are snappier, like jungles.
Don't knock coastals there big pussys cats, what bout a rsp bhp or woma they they can be greatgrow a pair
