Newbie needing advice please
Hi Everyone.
I have no snake as yet. Firstly, I want to get all the correct information.
I have done a bit of reading but know, I would like to hear from owners -
1. What size do these animals reach in captivity
2. Do they like being handled
3. What are they like as a first snake.
I think that I would prefer a baby to start with but should anyone here think otherwise, please say so.
I just don't want to feel intimidated by my snake as I will be handling him. My husband won't go near it.
Here are the three that I am looking at:
Coastal carpet python. ( morelia spilota mcdowelli. )
Centralian Carpet (morelia bredli)
Coastal Carpet ( morelia spilota maldowelli)
Advice will be appreciated.
thank you
Pascale

RE: Newbie needing advice please
"Hi Pascale, to help you in your deciding whats best, cheak back through the discussion forums on this site, and theres alot of advice about the care and maintainence of the species your looking at, if you havent already done so.............Start small, you will learn alot about your snake as you go, any of the species your considering would make good first-timer snakes"....................

RE: Newbie needing advice please
Hi Pascale and welcome to the site. I hope we can answer any questions you have.
Any of the Carpet Pythons make a great first snake. The Coastals will grow to over 2 metres and Centralians can grow over 3 metres.
Don't let this put you off, if you get one as a hatchling, it will take about 4 years to reach the 2 metre mark and by then you will be accustomed to the snake and how to handle it. You are definitely better off starting with a baby. As for handling them, they get used to being handled although over handling can stress them out.
I kept this very short so not to overwhelm you with information. It is much easier to criticise than it is to create, that's why so many people do it.

Mousey
You did not put in your profile location. Where are you from. If you are from Sydney I can get in touch with you and show you few things. You can look at my colection and get some idea.People with IQ over 100 don't need to swear.

Thanks everyone for your input. Now all I need to do is find a smallish enclosure then start looking for my future baby.

RE: Re: Newbie needing advice please
Just re-read my post...
D'OH!! wrote coastal twice. That should be:
Darling / Murray Python.
I have read quite a bit but could not find the size of these guys.
Being a "girl", I want a nice set-up my baby. Not kitty litter. He'll be too young to read so newspaper is out also. LOL

Re: Newbie needing advice please
You can get click-clak enclosures from Big W for about $12 in the Pet Section...Cheapest option by far, don't be sucked in to those pet shop ones that are inflated by 10,000% for a piece of plastic that your snake is going to grow out of in 6 months anyway.
