    UV enhancing colour in snakes...

Has anyone got any experience in this? I have been told that a small dose of UVB each day will help bring out the red in my bredli. I have no reason to discredit this information, as I know it applies to certain species of monitors.

I want to hear people's experiences regarding UV and snakes though.

    Cheers

Its actually the UVA that most influences colour expression.

Hi there! I use a 5.0 UVB bulb that is the length of the tank as daylight for my stimson python! Don't really ever notice any color enhancement but it's a good source of daylight without giving off to much heat to the whole tank so as to still keep a good gradient as I have a heat mat aswell on the warm sid. UVB is also suppose to make them more active, or so iv herd as all my stmmi does is hide in her log all day lol hope this helped. Peace!

I have a normal slim line fluro in my diamonds enclosure and that makes his yellow pop like crazy. I would guess its just the light colour emitted by the fluros rather then the uv.

I have read this too. I know that my Bredlis colours look brighter and more defined after he's had some time in the sun.

This has been researched and found not to be true, in the case of Bredli anyway. In 2006 I received some wild caught Bredli that were a brilliant orange...within 6 months they had faded to a dull brick red/brown like a typical captive. This has been documented a few times.

Jonno, are you saying that UV lights have no effect or that taking Bredlis into the sun has no effect either? I'm not questioning your knowledge I'm just confused. I'm sure I read in my Keeping and Breeding Australian Pythons that UV light did have an effect.

Thanks Nick, I'm lucky, my snakes are out quite a bit.

Confused!! Could explain this some more for me please? The way it reads just now is slightly contradicting. Also, if you could recommend any reading for me regarding this, it would be greatly appreciated. Cheers

Nice one. I think I may as well try it, don't really see any reason why not.
