lol.... Jemma awesome now days. Had few visitors over the last couple of days and has seemed to enjoy being out and handled by strangers, 5 or 6 different poeple in the last 2 days, all wanting to see her in her new skin.
As for size, I'm sure she's much bigger after shedding, its like the head of her shed opened and shot her out like a sling shot. I noticed when I got her out after shedding that there was alot more of her. This snake just kept unfolding and I'm wondering where it all came from...lol.
Probably been there the whole time though I'm guessing, although a mate reckons she's much bigger too and he handles her regularly.
You will notice some serious condition in your girl now you've gone up a size, there really isn't that much nutrition in a pinky for a growing girl, getting up a size or two can only help, and being on rats is a great move for later on when she's an adult.
Sounds like you are both getting used to each other and are happier. How long and often are you getting her out now?
Cheers,

Yeah shes on 2 Velvet rats every week. I fed her today, she finally looks like shes eating the right sized food ! I can finally see the lump in her stomach. I think shes getting close to sheding too, her scales just look dull at the moment. Im hoping she sheds
I dont know if ive asked this or not but is it okay to handle her while she is sheding or is it best for me to leave her alone until shes done.
I get her out almost everyday, im not sure how long. Ive just been holding her for as long as i feel like it, usually 5-20 minutes.
Thanks

Well, you can't really do her any physical harm from handling her, its just that they are usually hyper defensive when they start to shed as often they can't see through the milky/cloudy/opaque eye scale, so they lash out at what ever comes near them. So they can get "real" snappy and you already know how snappy a Jungle can be.....
.
I'll let you work out if you want to handle her or not, just keep in mind if she has a snap attack it's nothing personal, she's just agitated, maybe a little unsure of her surroundings and feeling very vulnerable being out of the safety and comfort of her enclosure. Fair to say alots happened in her life since her last shed.
It can stress them out if they're still getting used to everything, including you of course. I accidentally handled Jemma this shed, it wasn't until I was going to put her away I noticed her cloudy eyes. She didn't bite or attempt to strike but I left her alone after that, just because I knew what was going on and to give her space to do what she needed to do. Maybe I learnt that through being trained by the fairer sex in real life though....
As soon as she has shed, I would pull her out and give her a real good look over to make sure she has shed completely and not have bits of old skin etc hangin off her, then feed her. If she has patches stuck on her you might want to get a damp cloth and moisten the dead/old skin patches and very carefully try to remove the skin, not so hard that you damage/remove the new scales as well. If it seems to be a bit stuck, keep bathing her with your damp cloth, and using warm water probably wouldn't hurt either.
Jemma had a couple of small patches that I thought were going to be fun to remove but she just laid there let me gently remove the dead/dry skin. Almost like she knew that what I was doing was helping her, that and she basking in the sunshine at the time. They were just tiny little flecks of dry skin more than anything.
Also she might go off her tucker before a shed so don't panic, Jemma can go off her tucker for a month or more before getting milky eyes, then another week or so after that she'll shed. Some posts I've read on here, other keepers have said that they're snakes feed right up to the day of shedding though, so who knows. Another thing you might also notice is that they can sometimes hold onto their crap as well, you might find a skin and humungous dump as well..
. Jemma certainly did this time round, thought I was gonna have to hire a Hazmat suit for the disposal.....
. Probably a bloke thing too.
Hope that helps mate. Any questions don't hessitate to ask and I can relay my hours of experience...lol.

Ok thanks for the info
I reckon ill just leave her to shed when she does.
Yeah i dont know how ill go if she has some skin flakes, i dont know if she'll let me wipe them off. I'll have so much fun ! not.
But yeah i dont want to be stressing her out so ill definately let her shed when she does.
I'll let you know if i have anymore questions
thanks

It's possible to damage the new skin if you handle them while shedding. Also snakes can and do eat things that are too big for them and can hurt themselves, so don't go overboard with the sizes.

Just thought I'd mention it since you said you'll just let her decide if it's too big, when really their best judgement isn't very good at all haha

Wow this thread has been quite helpfull for me I got my jungle in march an he was hatched in January his name is psycho because he literally is!
I'm scared of him. I can't get him out of his enclosure as he fits out snaps and usually a normal snake will calm down being held but no not mine. Jumps out of my hands. I have been bitten a few times and I'm still scared of him! I've even thought about maybe selling him I feel terrible that I can't get him out often enough. It's so wild how different two types of snakes can be I have a spotted python aswell I think a year or so old and shehe is so lovely!!
How is everything going with your jungles?

His looking very dull lately too ntned can u give some advice on why the black markings are fading?? :/Last edited by rozzza.louise89; 18-Jun-12 at 08:58 PM.

Wow this thread has been incredibly helpful! I am looking at getting a jungle within the next couple of weeks and I'm not going to lie, the prospect of being bitten by a snake is terrifying for me. I have a high pain threshold but am a total wimp haha I'm more scared of the strike I think then the bite? I mean, I wouldn't say I enjoy getting needles but it also doesn't bother me. Its probably because I can expect a needle but, I have no control over when I'll get bitten. Ironically, I am not remotely scared of my 2.5m carpet biting me but that's because she has never bitten anyone lol.
Anyway, the point I am trying to make is that this thread has made it seem a little less terrified if the bite, given me some great ideas and made me so much more excited for my jungle! The idea of calming a jungle and being able to see its progress is an exciting one and something i am now looking for to - I can only imagine how rewarding is
.
Cheers,
Jess

Oh wow Yuni,
you must be getting good with her if your talking about getting the skin off. Don't panic too much about a crook shed, Jemma had an ordinary one the one before last. Perhaps the humdity was a little low being winter and all down your way. If your gonna leave the dead skin till tomorrow, just make sure there's no skin wrapped around her, that will need to be removed before it shrinks/drys and causes some restriction from the skin tightening around her. This can lead to big problems from restricting the blood flow if tight enough.
She'll probably want to a feed too, I know Jemma is hungry just after a shed.
And yes I wanna see pics too....lol. Nice work.
Hi rozzza.louise,
Sorry I've been having some issues replying without my reply to Yuni being on it as well.
I'd wait and see how he looks at the next shed, how long since he last shed? They do get faded when they're due.
Jemma was a bit faded and dull till she shed a week ago. It is also a recognised problem that some Jungles do lose their colours or fade, there's another thread called the Jungle thread and there are some on there with a similar problem. I think it's usually the yellow though from memory.
I hope this helped out some.
Cheers,

Hey Rozza, That sounds like my jungle. Im sure he will settle down, my python jumps from my hands too but jungles are known to be very snappy when they are young. Your pythons not even a year old yet! Dont worry, trust me im sure he will calm down as he gets older.
And the fading of colour, well my python did this before she shed. Is he due to shed? If he is thats probably why he has faded.
I hope you dont sell him, jungles are lovely snakes.
Turns out i wont need to get any skin off, she got the rest of it off overnight and now there is a huge mess for me to clean up.
Ill feed her today and take a few pictures of her, She looks so bright and ive noticed new yellow scales.
