Activities for Pythons

Since joining this site, I have seen noticed that allow their snakes out for free time. I have been overcautious I believe and my 3 1/2 year old water python has only ever been allowed with me or into the bathtub. I am interested in what kind of activities people do with their snakes, including the pitfalls and mistakes I do not want to make. She is about 3.5 feet long.

Apart from basketball on Fridays and Kick-boxing on Tuesdays. The only thing mine are allowed to do is go out onto the grass and soak up the sun.

Supervised closely of course.

There is no need for any activities for your python - apart from venturing outside for the odd photo opportunity on a sunny day there seems little point. I also think you should keep an eye o your snake at all times as they will get anywhere and everywhere

Also remember that most states have restrictions which don't allow your snake to leave your residence unless going to the vet etc...

Don't worry Rosepenni I'm just as cautious with mine too but we take ours out as often as time and circumstance permits into the sun and onto the grass! We have made up a couple of fake trees (see pic below) for them to climb on and just have some fun outside in nature rather than inside in an enclosure! BUT they are very closely supervised and we don't let them anywhere we think they can get themselves stuck or into trouble!

Also, although I suppose it goes without saying, there are a plenty of birds around that would love an appropriately sized snake as a meal - and they are generally a lot quicker than your reflexes...

Thanks for the tips, I thought I may be depriving her. I do handle her in the sun, being a water python that is when she looks her best, and she knows it!!!!

Ppl taking there snakes "out" is generally done for their own enjoyment, most of the things i have heard of ppl doing would just be stressing the snake out. They are not social animals and prefer to be left alone.
Its a bit like getting a fish putting it in a bag of water and taking it for a walk.

Is there something wrong with that? Flippers loves it, he is so much happier after a walk and gives me a guilt trip if I don't take him out for a few days

I saw a girl once get out of her car with an adult python wrapped around her waist. She then proceeded to walk across the road and into the reptile store. This was NOT the kind of outing I was asking about. I do like the idea of fake trees as per Mell's pic.
Also, I just measured mine for the first time. Thought she was 4ft, but she is actually over 5ft.

Yep watch out for Crows, Butcher Birds and Kookaburras! I'm always watching. Not sure if those birds could pick up our 4 1/2 foot MD's tho. Might be a tad heavy for em?? Someone on this site a while back had one of their Pythons taken by a Crow if I remember rightly?Cheers Cheryl

I usually take mine outside for a run on the grass. It helps with their digestion ie. the stretch out and full muscle movement makes them crap, and this in turn helps with my cleaning. I haven't had to clean a crap out of an enclosure for ages. I think it also helps keep them in condition, a bit of UV and a bit of muscle work for toning up. Always keep a close eye out for birds and never let them to far away. They tend to get stressed any longer than about 15 mins.

Wish the tepid bath and a cruise out in the sun would help the rescued MD, but it seems to still have one hard bit left inside. It is flat and about the size of a baby turtle shell. Operation for this one worse luck I think?

I never take my snakes outside, Im just to scared they will "run away" and i wont be able to catch them...I dont actually know how fast they can move...LoL so i handle them inside and give them UV lights in there enclosure...

I notice some ppl take their beardies outside also, but i know that these are really fast...

Regards...

Mine like BASE jumping, cooking lessons and romantic sunset walks along the beach. One of them is into drag racing, but I'm trying to discourage the habit for safety reasons. Most of them like to socialise with fish. I get the Carpet Pythons and put them in the fish tank for an aquatic adventure, then put the fish in the snake box for a terrestrial experience. They just love it. You should see Gillsy the Goldfish flipping around in ecstatic excitement, and Tapestry the Carpet swimming so enthusiastically you'd swear he thought his life depended on it.
