Adders and Red Bellies

Hey all,

how many people are keeping these? I'd be interested to hear any info people have from their experiences. I currently have adders and would like to get some red bellies at some stage, as well as some different types of adders

Yeah, they're really lovely natured snakes. When I was just starting to keep snakes I went to a snake show and the guy let me free handle a couple of his red bellies for about half an hour, I'm suprised he let me do that and it's not something I'd do these days but at the time an experience like that was enough to have a big impact on me, which is probably part of why they're my favourite species of snake.

If they do decide to give you a dose of venom it's extremely painful, so I'm told, I wouldn't quite put it as 'only getting sick'.

There are some elapids I don't worry about (little whips, white lipped snakes, red naped snakes, etc) but red bellies are one I'd rather not get bitten by.

Have you ever seen a RBBS chuck a mental Eddy??? They are very very VERY fast. They are considered dangerous to humans, so you should really go to hospital.

I love adders, but have had trouble with them staying on the hook!! First one i handled I dropped, and it bit my shoe :S...that was scary!!
Red bellie's I have not had much to do with, handled them only a few times, but when they go spastic, they are extremely fast! So be careful with them. And dont be a ******** and free handle anything!!!

Anyway thats my limited death adder/red belly experience for ya

By the way, which species of adder do you keep?? If it i hawkei or prryhus, I hate you

I guess you hate me, Baritji!
I love my barklies! They're the tamest pair of snakes I've ever seen (no, I still don't free handle them, despite being 100% sure I could).

Anyway, instead of hating me, get yourself some barklies, then we can both be happy

ahh you buggaro I would like to see some pics dude!!!

Yeah I will have them as soon as Parks and Wildlife grows a penis (so to speak) and allows us to keep elapids (within the next couple of months ) It is stupid, I know people up here who looked after venomous snakes for 15 years at ARP, they cant even keep them yet!!

What is it that you want to know about red bellies? There always seems to be people that want red bellies when I don't have any. I have been trying to sell babies for $50 for over 6 months and they have been very hard to get rid of. I ended up giving them all away. I don't think I am going to bother putting my pair together this season.

And as far as temperament goes, red bellies are generally pretty good but they are still dangerous snakes. They can be very excitable, especially when they think they are about to be fed, and this is when they are most dangerous! They can strike when you least expect it! My adult pair are both captive bred and about 5 years old. My male is 6ft and very heavily built. He is fairly calm and easy to handle (hook and tail) but still fairly unpredictable. The female on the other hand is extremely flighty and will often strike in every direction.

My advise to people who want a black snake they can handle is get a black headed python and some red and black paint!

Daniel

P.S. I will probably breed my top end adders (Acanthophis lancasteri) this season and may have some available early next year.

Yeah, that really sucks! Doesn't snakes NT sell elapids? How does that work? I hope they let you keep them in the not too distant future, no one should be denied their right to keep barkly adders!

In the mean time, keep working on the oenpellies

If anyone is interested in Barkley death adders you should contact Bob Withey. Last time I spoke to him (a week or so ago) he had heaps available at a very reasonable price!

I'm interested to hear whatever anyone wants to tell. The people on this site generally seem really keen to tell interesting or amusing anecdotes, so I thought I'd ask.

People will always seem to want what you no longer have and not want it when you want to sell them, it sucks! I remember a few years ago when red bellies were expensive and hard to come by, not so much like that now. As I said, I want to get red bellies "at some stage", it will be when I have more space and the right ones come along - from nice looking and natured parents of known origin, yeah, I know, I'm ultra fussy.

Are the A.lancasteri the top end 'hill' adders? I still get confused with all these new names. I'm mainly interested in getting some more Barklies, Dajarras and pyrrhus.
