Jozz do you know how dangerous bird netting is for snakes. Not only the physical danger of injury but the stress it causes....and I dont think trying to relocate a rbb after its got mighty angry after being caught in bird netting is a really smart thing to do....bird netting is sooo cruel.

That may have worked for you on occasion joz but i would have to agree with fredbear here... if you got a snake caught in it that put up a bit of a struggle i would hate to see the injuries that could result!

Cheers,
Ish

Your right fred but jozz said in her post she would keep an eye on it.
Birdnetting does the most damage when a snake is stuck in it for extended periods.
I have never had a problem removing snakes from birdnet and we get heaps here on the peninsula..
When left in the net over for extended period the snake can cause some amazing damage..Here is a pic of a tiger that had to be euthanised as the wound was already septic.
Evil stuff when used improperly..
Also i have found birdnet snakes and canned snakes that seem to lay still while you remove the net (or can)..
i think they know they being released and usually dont fret unless you hurt them..Like pull on the bird net which is cutting into them..

Isn't there a method that natives use to catch pythons? something about a cage with a rat in it, the snake goes in, eats the rat then can't get out because the bulge is too big?

This isn't the cartoon i wanted, but it'll do

The other problem with bird netting traps is the general public see you do it, and then don't both calling you next time - they just stick the trap out and let the snake die. There's plenty of other options rather than using bird netting.

Dont even consider bird netting a part from it being a horrific death if left unchecked it is totally illegal to trap a snake.

It's not illegal for licensed catchers.....

Thanks Baz, thats what I was going to say - they're only to be used if they can be monitored and rescued straight away.

Jonno, that is the biggest problem I have with them, and try not to use them anymore. I had a bad experience with someone I set a trap for, and told them that they had to watch it and call me straight away - I really emphasised it too. Anyway, they killed the snake when it was trapped. The thing that really peeved me off is that I didn't even ask for any money for the callout cause it was someone my mum worked with!

Hey Jonno, you say there's plenty of other options, but haven't offered any suggestions? What would you do? I'd really like to learn of other methods to use in this situation, as it is a fairly common one.

Just a thought....... i don't know if a frog eater would be in a huge hurry for a mouse.

And as for the bird netting, while it is horrible to rescue a RBBS from bird netting, you will be shocked and horrified that this was actually one method that was taught to me at a WIRES course i did. Not that i would take that as gospel but it is something that has been recommended in the past.

you could also put flour around the entrance leave for a day or so and see if there is any movement this works and lets you know wether the snake is there quiet often if called to a house with a gap in the floor and cant see anyway of getting out else where use that method baby powder also works the snake leaves a trail .......but if sure its in there use the hose like moose said ..........RBB
