| | | advice needed re: feeding spotted python hatchlings
Hi all,
I am harry 74's wife and given that he is unable to access the internet at the moment he suggested that I post here to ask for some tips about feeding our baby spotted pythons that hatched on Saturday the 27th of January. I am having trouble getting them to take their first feed. They have all shed and i have attempted to give them foof but all 10 refused. I foollowed the directions that my husband gave me but to no avail. 3 of them attempted to grab the mouse but let go and the others wouldn't go anywhere near the mouse. If anyone has some tips that would be wonderful!!!
thanks in advance
Tam

Were they fresh killed or frozen/thawed?
Were they the right temperature?
Did you try braining them?
The spotteds I obtained from MrBredli launch themselves across the tub at a warmed brained pinkie.

When i bought my Diamond it also had not fed at all. I was told to do the braining thing also but it just didnt work. I refused to run around the back yard to catch lizard to scent it with that so,
eventually, I got advice to go down to the local Bait n Tackle shop and buy a smelly pilchard (not frozen, most have fresh ones). My bait shop gave me the pilchard for free when i told what i needed it for.
Anyhow, just rub the pilchard on the pinkie and present it to the hatchlings. Mine didnt even hesitate, went straight for it first go.
Never had to scent a pinkie again after that, just needed the first go.
Thats what worked for me |

I offered mine this season live day old pinkies for the 1st feed. 1/2 took those. the next time i offered thawed and the rest took those. For troubled children's in the past i've also placed them in a small container (aa battery box) and placed the pinky (thawed overnight), they don't like it touching them so eat it to have it out of the box. I've found it to be very effective, though i do like the sound of the pilchard idea might try it next season if needed.
But once you get them feeding they are little machines, getting that 1st feed is the tricky bit.
Good luck......

If you know anyone with finches, rub one on a pinkie or stick a small part of the feather behind it's head. I usually use this method when braining, skink, live pinkie or chicken doesn't work. Most of the time they are feeding once braining starts.
I will have to try pilchards next i think. Interesting. Thanks

That Pilchard thing really worked for me. When I bought my DP she said its not feeding, has never fed handed me the snake and a live pinkie in a paper bag and said i'll be right. This was done in the back of her 4WD!! She saw me coming!!! lol
Would love for others to let me know how they go with it if they try it.
PS: usually pilchards come already witht he gut slit opn, rub the pinky in there, not on the scales. Thats what I did | | | |
