Advice Woma verses Black head Python for a Pet?

Hi Guys

Looking for a good snake as a pet that is of medium size and looking at either a woma or a black headed python. What are peoples opinion on which is better? Which is less bitey and more placid and easy going?

Where abouts do you live? If you live in NSW and you dont have your class 2 licence it will have to be a BHP i think BHP look cooler but other than that i dont know all that much about either I've heard good things about both.

For some reason you need an Advanced lic. in Vic to own a Woma. But that's just a matter of writing a cheque. I have a pair of Womas and have a pair of Qld BHPs on order. I suggest you get both: I think the BHPs look a bit more impressive. I think they both have reputations for good temperaments, but my understanding is Womas tend to be a bit calmer.

Andyscott your snakes are beautiful. Can you ever buy a BHP for less than $500 that is young and trainable still as I just cant affort the huge prices they want for them?

I think the BHPs are better looking snakes but they are both beautiful in their own right. I've got a number of womas and a couple of bhps and they are all a joy to handle snf oen. The womas when they are hatchlings can be a bit agro (but its all bluff) but they quieten down quickly.

Thinking.... I'd go a woma

IMO no-one can tell you what's the best snake to get . It's all just personal preference . I love the personality of the womas but I don't own blackheads yet . It's a tough call , get both .

Andyscott - love the BHP in the middle pic .

We recently asked the same question. Our local breeder advised us to get the black headed python over the woma as the womas can be quite bitey. We have 5 children aged 18 mth, 2 yr, 4yr, 6yr and 10yr. They all now regularly handle the bhp all the time. They have never bitten. The breeder said that if really upset the bhp will head butt you as a warning but never bite. Presently our two bhp are 4 months old. Also bhp are a favourite at snake handling shows at animal sanctuaries etc because of their docile temperament.

I've also been deciding between both Cemspec and I'm happy to say I found two absolutely gorgeous BHP's today They're the best snakes I've handled. Depending where you are, the BHP's may be cheaper depending on colouration/age etc of course. If you can find yourself a breeder of both close by to you (tough to find) you may spend time with both. Expect the hefty price tags though unfortunately. Goodluck!

bite the bullet and go both or flip a coin even draw the name out of a hat.
BHP will grow larger - caging consideration there.
Woma's tend to be smaller. both excellent snakes.

kept both, i'd go a woma for any 1st time python owners hands down.
