Advise me Friends

as i get closer and closer to selling my xb coupe, my purpose of which was to afford the luxury villa for a scrubby, i am beginning to think more along the lines of setting up a breeding program, i want to have a large collection end game and i guess i am thinking a scrubbie can wait.....

so people i am in vic, what Species do we need bred and you experts what should i start breeding, this first program will be the finicial basis for further increases in collection size,
i was thinking along the lines of bredli or even green tree snakes, help me friends, what is going to be my best bet for getting a leg up.

i was told by a well respected breeder that the blonde macs, spotteds and childrens are a great to breed as a money earner. Because of their size and housing requirements more can be kept in a given space. They are a great snake for beginners but if you have good quality and locality they also have a big appeal amongst general herpers.

Also price seems to stay fairly stable at between 150-300 a hatchy depending on quality and locality

HTH a little

My other advise (as a holden fan and herp lover) would be to keep the XB coupe cause they are a wicked car and are becoming rarer and rarer

Cheers
James

We need people in Vic selling Vic carpets, but they have to be known to be from Victoria, not just an MD of unknown locale.

May not be a massive market for those but I want one

Doctor,

If you want to make money then maybe consider something else...if you add up the time and money spent (we spent about 12 grand last year on herp related expenses).

I digress, Each snake costs about $50 a year to house plus food, to set up for say spotteds (10 females, 4 males) that is about 200 each for caging, a large incubator 400, the room, probes, licensing etc etc 5000, your intial outlay without the snakes will be about 7 grand with snakes if you brought adults you would be looking at 300 per snake (being fairly conservative) so an outlay of 4000. your annual bill for will be about 700 plus food which would be in the range of 200 per year so thats around 2800.

So your initial start up including first year will be around 7 for equip, 4 for stock, and 3.5 for feeding, cleaning equip etc.....total of $14,500 to set up a good sized breeding colony of adult Spotted Pythons.

If you breed from 6 of the 10 females you will average about 10 eggs per clutch, if you have an 80% hatch rate thats 48 baby spotteds that sell for around 100 each.

After you take out your annual cost of 3,500 a year, you profit about 1,300.....which you either re invest or put back off your initial start up......at this rate it will take about 8 years to make your intial investment back.

With high priced snakes, there is more cost in start up and in some cases more risk as their husbandry requirements maybe more specialised.

Not trying to dampen any sprits,

Cheers,
Scott Eipper

Hi Scott

When you say $5000 for the room, probes, licencing etc...what's costing the most there? It's a genuine question, I haven't looked into breeding at all so i don't know the costs, just curious why it adds up to that much? Cheers.

licensing depends which one but an advanced in vic is about 150... probes about 100, temp gun 200, sparkey for wiring about 2 g, air con....another 1,500, plumbing 1grand, desk, reference material, etc

It really depends on what yo think you can make do without....if you building a shed/herp room away from the house added cost/but benefits etc

Cheers,Scott

cost wise aitn to much of a problem, i am a plumber by trade and my neighbour is a boiler maker/ electrician, i have a air conditioner sitting in garage which is fully lockable and large enough to hold a large collection, i wasn't planning on going huge scale straight away maybe, 4-6 snakes all up just to get started and see how i go, thanks for your input though and highlighting costs that i may not have otherwise thought of

also at this stage its not so much a money making scheme as i make enough plumbing, it would be more for the fun and enjoyment of keeping a larger collection and raising young to bring enjoyment to others, any money i would make out of breeding would be thrown straight back at the animals and increasing the size of the collection
