April 2004 SA herp meeting

SA Herp meeeting was great. First talk was blind snakes from SA and how to tell the different species apart. The chief defence that they have is a very bad smell, discribed as a cross between fecal matter and vomit. I can imagine the ads "Pair of blind snakes - Male a bit smelly in the cage but ok once out "

The second part of the meeting was a corker, a blind demostration on using a snake venom detection kit. One of the hot keepers supplied a venom sample and the demostrator showed how to use the kit.

Main Points.

The kit takes about 20 minutes to ID the venom.
The kit only tells what anti-venom to use not the species of snake. But you will get a good idea.
The kits have a Maximum shelf life of 12 months. By the time they get to the coal face they proberly have less than nine months left.
The kits are $300 and contain three tests.

The best source of sample venom is the bite itself DON'T WASH IT . Other sources are blood and urine, but if the venom is in the urine then it has already spread.

If you wrap a bitten limb, wrap it about as tight as you would wrap a sprained ankle. If you don't know how tight that is, then go and sprain an ankle - right now.
Don't unwrap an affected limb except in a medical place and with anti-venom ready.
A wraped arm should include the dights. It is a good idea to put a mark on the bandage where the bite is so they can cut the spot and get a sample.

And there was a demo on milking a tiger snake and I assisted. Actually I was in the wrong spot at the wrong time and the milker said "Here, hold the *****ty end". What a smooth talker, who could resist. Milking involved pushing a covered jar under the snakes lip(?). It was very reluctent to bite and took a bit of convincing, but when it bit it bit hard. The snake was then placed on a table to demostrate how placid it was (no human body parts were put near it though). After the rough treatment you would expect the animal to be snappy or defensive but all it did was calmly try and hide.

And the test detected the venom correctly, it was from a RBBS.

All in all it was a really good herp night.

You should not judge keepers by their looks. What does it matter if they are hot or not?
