Snake dudes,
Would 2 rats be too much food for my 21 month old Diamond Python? She's just hit 5 foot and has been eating 1 small rat every 8-12 days for the past 3 months. She sheds every 3 months and seems to be gowing through a bit of a growth spurt.
The rats she gets are the Rat a Snack size small ones. They leave a bit of a bulge in her but nothing like when she first went on them.
Any advice would be tops.
Cheers.

2 rats should be ok. I feed all my snakes 2 serves each feed, and none are over weight

She'll be fine. It won't hurt. Maybe don't feed her so often. She'll grow quicker. |

i feed my 5 ft diamond 2 weaner rats a week.. works out great he grows very fast and healthy.. I gave him 2 small rats last week and it has taken ages for him to digest so maybe go with 2 weaners ever week or 2 small every 2 weeks..

i find it cheaper and easier to go up a size than feed two animals.

My 4 foot diamonds are on 1 medium rat per fortnight. They seem really healthy and the girl seems to be looking for a little more than 1.............and it hurts.....

i found out today that YES that is WAY to much for a DP especially.. I work at a petstore and my boss is a snake freak and has many snakes.. He feeds his diamond once every 10 days on a relatively big size meal. The reason is just because they are not meant to eat so much. Like us if we eat too much we become fat and lazy. I have now changed my feeding times to once a week and feeding him a weaner rat (he is 5 ft in length now)..

We feed our breeding stock every week (except for breeding season) and some of the new females that are coming up for their first time for breeding we will feed them a smaller food item twice a week.

I have not heard of breeders feeding their snakes 3 times a year, but i have heard of wild adult Diamonds eating only 3-4 times a year, on large possums albeit. But you do have to remember that a female Diamond eating only 3 possums a year is most certainly not going to breed year after year.

one of my coastals is just under 4 foot i plan to have him to just over 6foot by the end of 08 to breed which isnt that difficult hes getting atm 2 small a week and am going to increase as he grows, snakes grow very fast depending on how much you feed them i think it was sdaj who was sayigng he can get yearling coastals to 6 foot

no that is wrong (sorry to down your boss) but snakes are not like us we are mammals they are reptiles we grow completly different to them (check one of the scarfing topics) a snake up until it is at its fully grown size will grow depending on how much food it eats but will not become fat
cheers
