Death Adders would be the worst first elapid, in my opinion. Hard to handle, fastest striking snake in the world etc...

I reckon get a sub adult red belly.

If I had to have a choice, not that I'm going down this avenue, the RBB snake would get my vote! I spin out everytime I check out Varanus photo gallery. They are severely cool, and according to Varanus very placid as well. Wish you well on your choice.

Some of the older guys I know used to have them.
I remember when there were a pair of croc hatchlings in a bird bath, in David Jones at Warringah Mall. No fence or anything, just a sign saying that they bite. That as a looooong time ago.

Ricko,

I you want to keep a large elapid, than I would have to say you can not go past a Red Belly for your first one. These guys become very placid in captivity, more so than any other species. The only time you have to be carefull with them is at feeding time. When they smell food they go into a feeding frenzy and will bite anything that moves, including themselves. Boy do they like to eat. Now even if you are bitten by one there is very little chance of death.

If you wanted to keep a deadly elapid, than you really can not go past Death Adders for the first of these. As long as you handle them with a hook, and keep yourself at a body length from them, than you should never get bitten. Unlike the others that can leap out of their cages at high speed as soon as you open their cages and bite before you can react.

i know a RBBS that leaps ot of the cage at your face as soon as you open it. Never trust any dangerous snake. people who free handle elapids dont care if they or someone around them gets tagged or they are idiots. How many people have been bitten by 'docile' or 'sooky' pythons. I know I have. Just my Opinion
