BHP behaviour.

I am still new to keeping BHPs, I have only had mine since may of last year. When I feed my snakes they all grab and constrict their prey (dead of course). My BHP however, will bite many times like an elapid would and then retreat for a few mins, then come out and grab the rat to eat it. Has anyone else seen this type of behavour???

Craig.

Gday Craig,
Youve got one of those Blacksnakeheaded Pythons mate.!!
I have the same sort of thing with mine. My spotted strikes fast and coils up dead mice, but my bhp's seem almost hesitant to eat it. I feed them pre killed adult mice at the moment, the female just goes in slowly mouths it from head to tail and back again and then eats it, the male is just starting to do a quick strike at first and then does what the female does.Neither of them coil it. I ve thought of wiggling the mouse by the tail to see if i can imitate live prey , and get them to coil, but in the long run i'm happy that their eating. Don't worry about how they eat, the fact that they are eating is all that matters

Perfectly normal with Bhp's. I just chuck rodents or quails in and let them sniff, checkout and then eat.

So it is normal for a BHP to bite repeatidly like its injecting venom?
When he is fiesty he will rear up in an S position and open his mouth, flatten his neck and jerk his head back and forth.

He doesn't just grab the fuzzy rats and coil around them like every other python I have.

maybe he fells threatened? it sounds like a defensive display, it's only later that he realises that it is food.
i would love to see a pic of him in the S position with his neck flattened! blackheaded cobra

My male hisses loudly and occasionally strikes with his mouth closed, never rears up and flettens his neck. My female has never struck. i treat them very gently though, It is a challenge that i take seriously and teach ny kids to go slowly and try to pick our snakes up with out an attempted strike. It takes a bit of time but doesnt stress the snake. But yaeh they both bite their food repeatadly from head to toe before swallowing

1 in 5 will do this in IMO. The really fiesty ones have the fron't of their enclosure covered with black cardboard. This helps settle them down and avoids the damaging their mouths on the enclosure. It's a great sight when they are 9ft long launching 3 ft out of the enclosure at you in the exact posture you describe. I have one huge female that lunges when you enter the herp room 3 metres away. At 7 plus kg it's a fantastic sight.

This is definitely a defensive pose as others have said. Generally this is only in the cage. Place a towel on it's head, lift it out and generally they settle down in a few minutes.

Smile re BHP

Hi craig,my bhps will either sniff around and eat sometimes and then on other occasions they launch them selves at the source of the food like exocet missiles, grabbing a rat out of my hand or my finger then consticting like crazy.Hurts like hell when you have a 7ft bhp wrapped around your hand and your fingers in his mouth and they dont let go easy you have to be patient and gentle when getting them off so they dont hurt themselves.

Zulu,

The exact same happened to me with my 9 footer. Even misting it's head with water didn't work. I had to gently grab the skin under the jaw and then pull my hand downwards. I managed to get it out without the snake loosing teeth (my main concern). Hurt like hell and bled lots and lots. They are really lovely at times.

My larger BHP likes to smash his food against the sides of his enclosure befor he eats it.
