I am thinking of getting a pair of BHPs soon and am curious as to how quickly they grow so i can plan on what size enclosures they will need at what age. I knwo that there will be a lot of variance in size depending on how much they are fed but im just wanting average sizes.
Obviously for a hatchy they can be kept in a plastic container but at what age will they need to be moved into a "proper" enclosure? and at what age do they need a full size enclosure? and im guessing a good size enclosure would be around 5-6ft x 2ft x 2ft for a fully grown BHP?
Thanks,
Dave |

I got my male off Den about 7 months ago and as I recall, he was about 2ft then. I'd roughly estimate him to be about 4.5ft now. I've not really pushed him that hard food wise, either.
I plan to house my guys in 6x2x2's when they're adults. Once I've built my new enclosures, they'll both be going into 4x2x2's.
At the moment, my male is in a 3 x 1.5 x 1.5 and my female is in a 2 x 2 x 1.5 (roughly). She's about 3-3.5ft, I'd guesstimate, while the male, as I said is about 4.5ft now. She's not been pushed hard food wise, either.
Can't remember exactly how old mine are now. Somewhere over 12 months, but less than 24 months :-) |

Dont really know where this is going but im just rambling on..... |

I prefer to keep them in reasonable sized enclosures and upsize them as they need it. Gives me time to sort out bigger enclosures anyway. I certainly wouldn't recommend putting a hatchy in a 6x2x2.
By the same token, my enclosure are (usually) a bit bigger than is absolutely required, just not relatively massive. |

| | Regular Member | | | | | i agree that i would not put a hatchy straight into a 6x2 and if i do end up with spare enclosures along the way i figure that is the perfect excuse to get more snakes!!! by the sound of there growth rate surely a 2yr old snake would be more than happy to be in a 6x2 though with sufficient hides etc??? |

| | Geek Subscriber | | | | Okay guys... these are my two bhps.
Both bhp photos were taken about a month ago, and both have shed since the photos were taken.
First photo is the female, second is the male. First enclosure is the female's, second is the male's.
As for the enclosures.... the white melamine one is good, but to be honest, I've always disliked those glass enclosures that I have the male in. The amount of ventilation SUCKS for maintaining humidity. Looks like there's less of an issue with aspidites and humidity than some other species though. On top of that, I dislike the fact that they're transparent on all sides. Seth doesn't seem to mind though. All I can say is I wouldn't buy another of those enclosures.
As I said, they'll both be going in 4x2x2s when I get those built (hopefully within the next 3 weeks). Not so much because they need it yet (though Seth isn't too far off), but because my womas are outgrowing their storage boxes and I want to move them into the enclosures the bhps are currently in. Eventually, the womas will go into the 4x2x2s I'm building and the bhps will go into 6x2x2s.
Oh, and for heating, I'm using heat mats for the both of them, at the moment. |

Those water bowls might look nice, but they're not very practical, really. The greater the surface area, the quicker the water evaporates! I prefer the smaller and deeper (and plainer, thus easier to clean) water bowls my ramsayi have. |

I've noticed he's got a couple of light spots showing up in his banding too, I've recently noticed. They might just be more noticeable now because he's bigger, but I don't think they were there before
Reminds me... did you ever get a chance to figure out if he came from that female? Probably doesn't make much difference if he did or not though, considering the questions over genetics. Neil Sonnemann was also telling me they can actually go "back to normal" as well, which I didn't know! Interesting stuff.
And yeah... if you're looking to get one/some bhps, I'd recommend you have a look at Den's, when he's got some available, David (and I'd assume he'll have some in the near future?). Den's a good sort :-) | | |
