BHP Impaction Removal

Hi all, you may remember our thread on the impacted BHP. Turns out that I was correct and it was an impaction and not a tumor. The x-ray did not show hardly anything so i guess it was hard to tell. Well, i have not long got back from the vets. The BHP had surgery and the impaction was removed. The impaction was 18 cm long. It was a real spinner watching the surgery nd i have posted the pics i took below. The BHP is now recovering here, so hopefully all will go well. It is just starting to come out of the aneasthetic, is taking lots of big deep breaths. Time will tell to see how it goes.

Impaction is basically constipation. It can be caused by an excessively warm ventral heat source, slightly cooler temps than usual, lower humidity, drying substrates, overfed and underactive snakes ( taken from ' whats wrong with my snake ' ). In this animals case i dont know the actual cause is / was as it is a wild one. Am sending a small part of the impaction away to see what is was so i can get an indication of what it has been eating.

No idea yet inny. Seriously doubt rat though as wild snake and not many rats here. Am sending some away, preserving the rest for a sick sort of souveneir. Will most probably be a bluey or a monitor or ?????? Interested to find out but. It is going to be one of the stories in our latest Pilbara Wildlife Carers newsletter. Good experience for us too

The vet was more than happy for me to be there. I was asking heaps of questions to which he was happy to answer. We were surprised to find that the gut was more or less attached ( stuck to ) the dermis. Not sure if that is the correct term. I didn't expect it to be like that but then i havn't been into any reptile like that before. He did three layers of stitches which should disolve in about 4 weeks. I think the biggest hurdle to get over now will be infection or shock in the short term. The anti-biotics i have been given is Baytril and will be injecting .2 ml every 2 days. I am hoping it pulls through. Whether it will be releasable again is another matter, but i think it's far to early to tell yet.

Womas4me. The normal dose rate for Baytril is .1ml/kg daily. Also I note that you were injecting intermuscular. We have found from autopies of snakes that did not survive that Baytril causes servere briusing around the injection site. Try just injecting under the skin. rather than into the muscles. Works just as well, but without the severe bruising.

The highest risks of infections occur when you operate on the gut. But with antibiotics, it should pull through. That was one nasty feacal matter yours guys removed from the poor thing

Thanks bigguy. It is 1.8 kg so will use .18 ml. Vets advice on dosage frequency and way dosage is given. Will take your advice and do daily and just under skin. Do you pinch the skin up to get it under? It was nasty, didn't smell much though. Have also taken your advice on the butchers paper. Anything else that might come in handy. I have it at 27 cool end and 34-35 under lamp.
