I have a question for all of you people 'in the know', I have an adult male maccy (over 1m long), and a female that is over 60cm, about the girth of a man's middle finger. Would she be large enough to breed this season or should I wait until next season? I can add a pic for size if that helps.
Cheers

How you goin, personally i have not yet bred snakes but i do currently have a pair of stimsoni mating. from what iv been told and have read, The male is definately ready but i dont think she is yet. i have spoken to breeders that tell me that they have had their females breed succesfully at 2 feet but personaly i wouldn't risk that as it could injure your snake and shorten its life, i would wait till next season to insure the health and well being of the snake.

The short answer is that she is probably not ready.
How old is she? I'd usually have a spotted python to over 60cm by the time it is 6-8 months old. I have some Children's pythons which hatched in the Summer just gone which are about 60cm long and certainly not ready to breed. I have a female Children's python which hatched in the previous season (now a little over a year old) and she is just under one metre in length, but desptie the fact that I could, I probably won't attempt to breed her until the 2006-2007 season.
A friend of mine bred a female childreni in the season just gone at 18 months of age and about 75-80cm in length. She retained her eggs for 2-3 weeks longer than she should have and they came out much larger than any childreni eggs I've ever seen. We think she is lucky to have come through it without any health problems. Better not to risk it.

Well the stimsoni i have that are currently mating are both about 18 months old and the female is about 3 feet (goerge town) and she is as large as my 6yr old female that bred succesfully in 2003, she produced 6 eggs with 100% success rate. But i wouldn't breed anything smaller then her as i wasn't going to breed her this yr.

Too small in my opinion girth of a middle finger is nothing get her nice and fat for next year, how often are you feeding? make it every 5 days and you will notice the difference.
