To all the breeders: What's the general consensus on breeding your females every year? I've been told that it's best to give them a break every second year. But if she's plump enough/in good condition will it be doing all that much harm?
Specifically I'm refering to diamonds.
Any advice/experience would be appreciated.

I know Bob and Shane breed the same females every year just about, Shane has a mac he has bred 15 years straight or something. And bob the same with a couple of Olives.. Im sure it would be best for the snake to give them a rest though I suppose..

Yeah, there seems to be a bit of debate about this. Breeding every year is very unlikely to happen in the wild, but it seems that a lot of the consistent breeders like the Stones do it regularly with their girls, with few bad effects. I know a lot of the chondro breeders in the states allow their females to breed for maybe 4-5 times then retire them at around 10 years of age. I have heard that most of the deaths of mature females in captivity are related to breeding/egg laying complications though. Worth considering in the long-term.

Thanks for your reply. I've cooled my diamonds but I'm yet to seperate them 'cause I wasn't planning on breeding them. Now I'm not so sure. Do think it's too late? Maybe the male will be less efficient..?

i reckon cooling them yearly is the way to go, but i would probably breed them two consecutive years then give them a year off,

I think it is different with cooler climate species like diamonds. I would have no problems breeding a childreni year after year, but wiht our diamonds we have already discussed and agreed that it will be two years on, one year off. Depending on condition of course. But they will always get a rest.
Shane has stated to me that he rests his diamonds and doesn't breed them year after year.
We breed one of our diamonds last year, but she isn't quite adult size, so she will miss this season and possibly the next. We have other diamonds to breed instead |
