Bungarrow lizards

Can any W.A. locals identify these guys?

My daughter works at a mine which is a few hundred km north of Kalgoorlie & she sees what the locals call "bungarrow" lizards quite a lot during the hot weather. No cameras allowed on site, so I can't get any piccies & she's not into herps, so her description is not fantastic. "About a meter long & varied color, some are near black." They are apparently pretty numerous & they bask on the roads, with the odd one being run over by the dumpers.

Googled it to no avail.

Thanks in advance,

Col J.

Bungarrow lizards are sand goanna's, it is a common name for them amongst indigenous Australians and many people who live in remote areas.

Theres a famous line in a Kevin Bloody Wilson song (who hailed from Kalgoorlie) about cooking a Bungarrow on the lawn.

Bungarra refers to just about any large goanna.
